How can I record tv shows using my Sylvania (ssr90v4) DVD/VCR recorder? - sylvania ssr90v4 combo dvd/vcr recorder

I am having trouble trying to program for my daughter with the Sylvania DVD / VCR Recorder (ssr90v4) our Dish Network DVR. The problem seems to be, if I load the new DVD of the mark in an error message reading, "Reading is not available for this record or this record is not recorded in the current situation," I could use Memorex DVD-RW, the discs or something else? Please help if you can. Thank you in advance.
